Lowndes Park has been recognised as one of the country’s best green spaces with a prestigious Green Flag Award. To celebrate the award, a ceremony was held in the park at midday on the 28th July, at which the Green Flag was raised on the park’s flagpole by Skottowes Pond. The ceremony was attended by Town Councillors, including the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mrs Tina Michael and representatives of community groups, including the Friends of Lowndes Park, who have done so much to turn it into an award winner.

The Green Flag Award scheme rewards the best parks in the country. During judging in May, Lowndes Park stood out for its excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and high standard of safety and security. The park is managed by Chesham Town Council, which is committed to the continual improvement of the park’s facilities. Examples of recent projects include the total renovation of the children’s play area and the installation of new bins, seats and welcoming signage.

Town Mayor, Councillor Jane Bramwell, said: “I am very pleased that once again Chesham has been awarded the Green Flag, which is a tribute to the hard work of our parks and premises staff and the devotion of our unpaid volunteers, the Friends of Lowndes Park.”

This year has seen the highest number of awards handed out nationally – a record 1,200 Green Flags and Green Pennants across the UK compared to 1,013 in 2009. Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award through the scheme, which is run by environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace.

Paul Todd, Manager of the Green Flag Award Scheme, said: “It’s a remarkable achievement that so many parks have successfully reached Green Flag Award status this year. The staff running the parks work very hard throughout the year to ensure their facilities are maintained to a high standard and enjoyed by the entire community.

“As the recession bites and people look closer to home to enjoy the outdoors, the provision of high-quality, free open spaces is of particular importance.”

The Friends are moving the weekend working party to the second Sunday of the month and the next one will be on Sunday 12 February. We hope to be pruning roses, weeding the beds and then take a look to see if the snowdrops we have planted over the last few years are coming through. We meet at 10am in the Archena Garden which is next to the Temperance Hall in Church Street.
